This page shows images of the 2021 Compass Photography Calendar. The images below are low resolution scans of the actual hard copy calendar pages.

Where the month does not start on a Monday, the grid of dates have an additional image associated with the main picture. Likewise, where the month does not finish on a Sunday, the spare space is used to hold another image associated with the main one.

January, February and March

January’s images were captured on a cold and very windy Sunday in Kent. The waves beating down on Ramsgate Beach give evidence to the extent of the wind.

A night time image of Edinburgh Castle is the featured image for February. It was captured on a cold night in the city. It is paired with a wide angle shot of the three bridges which now stretch across the Firth of Forth.

Brighton Pavilion comprises the main image in March 2021. The lovely cream onion domes of the building show nicely against the green foliage and blue sky. Yellow sand and blue sky feature on the second image of Brighton beach.

April, May and June

Flatford Mill in Suffolk is our location in April 2021. The main image shows Willy Lott’s Cottage, akin to Constable’s Hay Wain painting. Click here link to see more about the painting. Images of buildings near to the cottage and a peaceful river Stour go with the main image.

May 2021 finds us in Kent on the Royal Military Canal, which runs though Hythe. Click here to read about the interesting history of the canal. Complimentary images show stream engines on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and a broad expanse of beach at Greatstone.

The images for June are move us to Normandy in France. One of the Japanese Bridges in Monet’s garden is the main image. The other images show an old water mill at Vernon and a view of the Seine from the top of the castle at La Roche-Guyon. The castle was Rommel’s HQ in 1944.

July, August and September

For July we return to England and images of Kent. The main image shows the large pond at the bottom of the hill at Battle Abbey. Look at the water lilies and the reflections! The White cliffs of Dover and Bodium Castle make up the numbers for July.

August 2021 finds us in Croatia. Almost every night of our two week holiday in Tucepi had a sunset like this. The two long thin images both show Makarska. Each image is captured from the site of the other one. The bottom one is of the main town captured from a peninsular with St Peter’s Lighthouse. The top one is the reverse image and it is just possible to see the statue of St Peter.

In September we move to Valentia Island, one of Ireland’s most westerly points. It lies off the Iveragh Peninsula in the southwest of County Kerry. It is linked to the mainland by a bridge at Portmagee but there is also a ferry. You can see for miles from the summit of the Island. To the left, the next stop is America.

October, November and December

The inner harbour at Marseilles on a calm October morning forms the main image for October 2021.The water is not completely still, however there are some nice reflections. The bridge at Avignon forms the complimentary image. Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as the Pont d’Avignon, is a famous medieval bridge in Avignon. A wooden bridge spanning the Rhône between Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Avignon was built between 1177 and 1185. The history of the bridge is interesting. Click here to find out more.

We travel to Sydney in Australia and stand by the iconic Opera House for November’s image. Captured in a rain shower the image shows the Sydney Harbour skyline. The complimentary image shows the Opera House and the Coathanger Bridge from near Mrs Macquarie’s chair on a sunny day.

Essen in Germany is the location of the main December 2021 image. This group were preforming festive carols in the Christmas Market when I visited. The two other images for December show stalls at Dusseldorf and Essen Christmas Markets.

The back page has an image of our tomcat Ernie, who had climbed the pole which holds up the washing line.
