A visit to Chartwell in Kent is a great day out! Chartwell was the home of Sir Winston Churchill for many years. The estate was bought for the nation by friends of Churchill in 1947. A plaque on the side of the building commemorates this purchase.

The first image shows the house on the hill from across the lake below it. It was a lovely September day. Additionally, the trees on the far side of the lake frame this image. Secondly, image two shows a sculpture of the Churchills relaxing in the grounds of their home. Following the path around the lake, we view a wide image of the calm waters of the lake, with clear reflections of the trees and the small bridge. A close up image of the weeping willow tree and the bridge forms image four. This image is also cut to a square format.

Image five shows a close up of the house from the side. Built on a hillside, Chartwell has a number of stories and a great depth to it. These multi-faceted features are not apparent when you view the building from the front. At the front it appears to be a long two storey construction.
Image six is a panoramic view of the park from the terrace behind the house. It offers views of the lake and woodland. The weathervane atop the house is in the form of a ship or galleon and forms image seven. Lost in the grounds, it was restored by Churchill’s architect.
Finally in image eight, we reach the front view of the house and people queueing to go inside. In contrast to the previous view this one appears more “ordinary”. Shot into the sun, the house appears a little dark. Image nine is a close up of a Sedum spectabile in the gardens, whereas image ten is a close up of the plaque commemorating the purchase of Chartwell in 1947. A great place to visit!
