Viewing Maldon from the Heybridge side of the Blackwater involves quite a walk! It took over an hour to walk to where I wanted to be. On the hottest day of the year so far! I wanted to capture images at high tide from the banks of the Blackwater opposite Maldon. With the tide in there was a great expanse of water at the easterly end of the walk, opposite Brythnoth. There are some really interesting views of the curve in the Promenade and the statue itself.

It is possible to get a view right across the promenade park to the boat yard and then to the Thames barges moored at Hythe Quay. One of the images shows Brythnoth on the left and the promenade snaking round in an “S” shape until it reaches the boat yard.

By removing the water and the foot of the image and the sky at the top of the picture panoramic images have been created. The technique emphasises the breadth of what is there to see. It’s an aspect missed with the normal proportions of an image. These images include:

• One showing the vast expanse of water at high tide and sailing boats taking advantage of same
• The immense length of the promenade park
• A closer up shot of the boat yard, the church and Hythe Quay
• The land between the two edges of the Blackwater. Here we see broken boats as well as the scrubby grass and the town in the background

A close up of the island between Hythe Quay and Heybridge is shown. Here we see the church and three Thames barges at the quayside. As I was walking back to the car, the Thames Barge Hydrogen came round the bend. The barge came surprisingly close to the Heybridge bank of the river and was passed by another boat. The other boat left a photogenic “S” shaped trail in the water alongside Hydrogen. Finally there is an image of the Ship pub at Heybridge. It’s amazing that there is lots to see of Maldon from Heybridge.
