This week we had a day at Colchester Zoo. We booked tickets on line and turn up for our time slot. The male lion sat lion sat majestically, surveying his domain. The meerkat posed by sitting up as well.

The flamingos were difficult to photograph, they kept moving. In the image of them shown in the slide show they are nosing an egg around. Sometimes one of them would sit on it. You could title this image “bottoms up”.

Two elephants graced us with their presence. They moved slowly around using their trunks to feed themselves with straw. The first image of the giraffe shows his neck horizontal. The pen has been built so even his neck can’t reach to the public. Yet he stretches to try and reach along the row of onlookers.

Elephants and Giraffes

Zebras were with the giraffes. The image shown is of a Zebra nose on. You can see his stripes expand on both sides of his body. Three giraffes then decided to progress to their food in line astern. The panoramic image shows this.

The large grey bird is an East African Crowned Crane. Two cranes were shepherding young ones around. In the image shown I love the way the mum and baby have lifted their foot to walk.

The wallaby was uninterested in us as we wanted past. Munching his food was all that mattered. Interestingly, he was free to roam with us. The tiger stretched on the roof of a hide in an aloof way. People wandering past seemed of no interest!

Our penultimate visit was to the cheetahs. The expression on this cats face seemed to say “what a fine specimen I am”. Our last stop was by a large enclosure with a hornbill in it. We had to wait quite a few minutes for him to turn round and give us a front view. In the end it was worth waiting for!
