Writtle College gardens are not “gardens” in the same way that the RHS gardens are. Walking around these gardens could make you think that your were at an RHS site though. Most of the Writtle College training programmes focus on horticulture. Therefore the grounds comprise a range of plants, shrubs and trees set to show them off. Students on the different training programmes learn from being amongst the plants. Maintenance and development projects in the gardens are used as part of the students learning experience. Its a real hands on experience!
One aspect that did take some getting used though. We were encouraged to pull, cut or break leaves and other parts of plants off to inspect them and learn from them. In a normal park or garden this would be a hanging offence!
