The start of September finds us in the last days of summer. These images show flowers in our garden at the end of August or on the first two days of September. The purple petunias are lasting well in their flower pouches and look nice against the dark wood.
The courgettes and marrows continue to provide large ugly looking bright yellow flowers. These then turn into dark green courgettes and marrows.
Sunflowers
The sunflowers are lasting well. To keep them looking good it is necessary to cut off dying heads. The pompom “teddy bear” variety are really lasting well as the image shows. There is an image of a “Little Leo” sunflower shedding its petals. Another image shows the pollen spilling out on to the sunflower’s leaves. Both varieties are dwarf sunflowers growing about three feet high.
Runner beans were originally grown in the UK for the display of their flowers. Here we see both red and white flowers on the frames that are producing the runner beans.
Passion flower
The slideshow includes an unusual image of a passion flower. It occurred to me that it would be interesting to see the flower sideways on. This way it is possible to see the ten petals and sepals and above them the radial filaments. These can number 100 and are delicate shades of blue, white and purple. Next we see the ovary and receptacle. Highest of all are the three stigmas and five anthers. All flowers have these components. Viewed from this angle the display of the passionflower is very striking. Lets enjoy the last days of summer whilst they last.
