Toot Hill

Near Toot Hill in Essex

These images are from locations in or near to Toot Hill in Essex. Toot Hill is a small village in the Epping Forrest district of Essex, England. It is located 2.3 miles south-west of Chipping Ongar and 3.5 miles east of Epping. Its population is less than 2100. Previously, I used to pass through the lanes here once a week. I used the lanes as a cut through from the A414 to Theydon Bois. I also enjoyed the drive, it was better than a main road.

Seeing the Seasons Change

It was a great joy to see the seasons change from Summer 2015 right round to harvest time the next year. These images were created one August Saturday in 2016, where I wandered around the area with out the normal time pressures of getting too and from my normal destinations. 

 

  • Toot Hill
    Essex, Toot hill Toot 125. Again on Tawney Common the location allowed me to play with the composition options. Here we have the focus locked on the farmhouse with the lens turned to capture the oak leaves too, but out of focus
  • Cornfield
    Essex, Toot Hill Toot 115. The opposite use of focus lock here, when compared with image 125. In focus is on the oak leaves with the crops behind them giving off the bitty texture of rice crispies or macaroni
  • Toot Hill cornfield
    Essex, Toot Hill Toot 093. I explored a lane, Tawney Common I think, which was long and straight. On the right hand side of the lane was a large open expanse of yellow corn, with the land rising and falling and tractor tracks marching over the folds.
  • A house in the field
    Essex, Toot Hill Toot 085. Working back along Tawney Common the land is flat and in the distance across the field is a farmhouse. Impacting the picture are the telephone and power lines
  • Dandelion
    Toot 059. You won’t find many images of dandelions in our galleries, however concentrating on the close image of the flower and stalks places the background into a fusion of darker greens
  • Toot Hill
    Toot 031. The oak tree and its shadow dominate this image captured on a sloping field, looking slightly up hill
  • Toot 004. The crops seem to go on for miles, like a prairie. The sentinel stalks of corn march across the landscape and their taller wisps slice the ribbon of trees in the distance
