National Trust Poppies at Crantock

We have had success in photography competitions with two images recently. The poppy field captured at Crantock near Newquay was one of the images that did well. We were there in June last year and the whole hillside was covered with poppies. Most were red, some were yellow. The National Trust field sloped down towards the sea and the hills on the other side of the valley. The sun was out that day and it was summer at its best. This image was entered in a competition called wildflower landscapes, it came 11th out of 1374 entries, in the top 1%! Use this link to visit the National Trust website for Crantock Beach

The second images is more of a strange one. It has had success in photography competitions entitled “strange but true”, “off the wall” and objects on grass. The image shows a sculpture at Marks Hall Gardens last autumn. The white sculpture shows the top half of man supposedly climbing out of something. His arms are levering himself up and he is concentrating on what he is doing. It makes quite an impression. This image came 9th out of 1004 in its best position. Cascades under an ancient green canopy

Golitha Falls is the location for cascades under an ancient green canopy. The water cascades though a gorge of ancient oak trees at this Cornish nature reserve. There is no single large waterfall, instead multiple waterfall form this cascade.  The water feeds into the River Fowey at the end of the gorge and travels down to the sea.

The woodland flora here has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The image forms a lovely scene. The stones along the bank are covered in moss. Several cascades are in evidence. The tree branches grow randomly  at odd angles. The water reflects the green canopy above it. This is a scene from June, however the leaves give an impression of April. The feet of the tripod were actually in the water, allowing the shot to be captured from near the water level. Within the gorge you can only hear the sound of the water. Peace and tranquillity reign. Rain had fallen the day before we visited. This had increased the water flow. We recommend a visit here.

Image of the week from Fowey

The image of the week from Fowey shows a view across the river to Bodinnick. Two images are attached. The daytime image is at high tide, whereas the second image is captured at 22:15. This is the view from the balcony of the apartment we rented for two weeks. The Bodinnick ferry runs across from Fowey to the slipway shown. The bright orange car ferry is not included as it is not very photogenic, but functional! This ferry terminal is said to have existed since the 13th century. I enjoyed watching the comings and goings on the river. Large and small boats went past.

Ferryside

Ferryside is the name of the blue and white house. It was bought by the du Maurier family. Daphne du Maurier wrote her first book at Ferryside, which used to be known to the locals as Swiss Cottage. Originally the property was a boatyard. Bodinnick nestles on the hillside amongst the greenery. The steep hill is a challenge to man, beast and motor! The yellow lines on the road do spoil the image a little!

After dark

The long exposure of the night time image makes the water appear calmer when it is reflected in the lights. The road has water on it from the rain. It was fascinating to watch the lights in the houses come on one by one and add to the image.
