Won prizes with these images. The Schoolroom at the chapel in Woodham Ferrers ran a Michaelmas Photography competition. The competition attracted over 100 entries. In addition it should be noted that it raised money for Mission Romania. Firstly, Mission Romania is a Salvation Army charity which delivers shoeboxes direct to children in Romania and Moldova. As well as providing shoeboxes, the charity is active in providing other support to these communities. So its worth supporting. Search for Mission Romania on Facebook and look at the great work that they do. Click this link

Five of my images won prizes and they are appended to the text here. Three images were in the “Best of Essex” category, whereas one was in “Flowers”, while the final one was in the “Sunrise/sunset” category. When entering images for a competition, you never know which ones the judges will select for prizes. Following previous times when I have agonised over the images I did a quick pick this time just before the entries closed. It seems to have worked!

Battle of Britain Airshow

Battle of Britain Airshow

The Imperial War Museum at Duxford hosted the Battle of Britain Airshow on Saturday and Sunday 21st/22nd September. On Saturday thousands of people attended. The sky was clear and bright, the weather was hot and the views were really good. The displays of WW1 and WW2 planes were really interesting. See the three photographs. Rochford Arts Festival

Mike’s images are on display as part of Rochford Arts Festival. An Art trail has been created around Rochford and there are guided tours to meet the artists. St Mary’s charity shop, 7 North Street, Rochford is where the images are on display for 12 days. St Mary’s run a Horse Sanctuary. If you like looking at art have a wander round the centre of Rochford in the next few days and look at what is on display.

The 2020 Essex Landscapes calendar from Compass Photography is now available. Attached to this post is a copy of the front page of the calendar. Below the main image for each month is an appointments matrix . Normally, this matrix would have blank squares. This calendar has placed more images in those blank squares in each month’s appointments grid.

Visit our exhibitions at Rayleigh

Visit our exhibitions at Rayleigh. Mike is currently exhibiting photographs in both the Mill Hall (The Mill Arts and Event Centre Rayleigh) and Rayleigh Windmill. The two venues are next to each other and there is car parking.

The Mill Hall exhibition continues from now until the 16th August 2019. A photograph of the images is shown below, however click here to look at all the images on display on our website. The Mill Hall is open most days and it is possible to view these images at any time.

The Rayleigh Windmill Exhibition continues from now until the 25th August. A photograph of the images is shown below, however click here to look at all the images on display on our website.     Smallest of dwarf sunflowers

    Smallest of dwarf sunflowers

    This is the smallest of dwarf sunflowers. This variety of sunflower should grow to three feet high. All of the others from the packet are now that high. The bright yellow flowers are coming out in the garden making a nice show

    Accidental small dwarf sunflower

    I didn’t notice this one when I was potting the rest of them on. So it stayed in the greenhouse in its small pot and has grown even up even smaller. As the flower bloomed I brought it inside and it is sitting happily making a nice contrast with the plum coloured carpet. Next year I think that I will do this again with three or four dwarf sunflowers to have some spectacular colour inside our house! I will try and organise a better pot though!

    Images of the Kent seaside

    On one of the hottest days of the year I captured some great images of the Kent seaside. The sun shone without a break as I travelled from Cape le Ferne in the east to Dungeness.

    Capel le Ferne is white cliffs of Dover country. It has a great café on the top of the cliffs. The Lees at Folkestone looked almost tropical in the images captured from there. Sandygate roasted in the sun. Behind Waitrose at Hythe I found some welcome shade along the calmness of the Royal Military Canal. Dymchurch was busy and it was extremely hot driving the steam engines at the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway so I was told!).

    The beach at Greatstone had lots of people on it and pebbles reflected in the sunlight. Dungeness looked as special as it always does, perhaps more so in the sun. A yacht passed by near to the shore and provided a nice opportunity to photograph it in the blue sea against the yellow pebbles.

    The Wild Atlantic Way

    The Wild Atlantic Way

    The west coast of Eire is rightly christened The Wild Atlantic Way. The cliffs are spectacular and the scenery is beatiful. The waves roll relentlessly into crash against the rocks. There are some “famous” locations on the Wild Atlantic Way for photography, however, there are many other locations with great views and less tourists. Here you can enjoy the view and the sounds of the sea in peace and quiet, almost!

    This image was captured south of Killee on the cliffs of the Loop peninsular. Bishop’s island is seen on the left, approaching the land like and  aircraft carrier. The wide angle lens has “stretched” the sky, although it allows us to see much more of the coast. Winding steep single track roads got us to this vantage point, sometimes right on the cliff edge!

    Rayleigh Mill Hall Exhibition

    The images on display

    Rayleigh Mill Hall Exhibition. Mike is exhibiting photographs at The Mill Arts & Events Centre (Mill Hall, Bellingham Ln, Rayleigh, Essex UK SS6 7ED).

    The images are on display until the 16th August. The theme of the images exhibited is landscapes from above. The images show landscapes and seascapes captured from a high vantage point. as there was space I have also put some other images in the display too.

    The Rayleigh Mill Hall Exhibition is free to visit and is open from 0900 to 1630 Monday to Saturday. Why not have a wander down and have a cup of coffee in the café too! I will forgive friends in Liverpool, Australia and Hong Kong for not attending!

    Cascades under an ancient green canopy

    Cascades under an ancient green canopy

    Golitha Falls is the location for cascades under an ancient green canopy. The water cascades though a gorge of ancient oak trees at this Cornish nature reserve. There is no single large waterfall, instead multiple waterfall form this cascade.  The water feeds into the River Fowey at the end of the gorge and travels down to the sea.

    The woodland flora here has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

    The image forms a lovely scene. The stones along the bank are covered in moss. Several cascades are in evidence. The tree branches grow randomly  at odd angles. The water reflects the green canopy above it. This is a scene from June, however the leaves give an impression of April. The feet of the tripod were actually in the water, allowing the shot to be captured from near the water level. Within the gorge you can only hear the sound of the water. Peace and tranquillity reign. Rain had fallen the day before we visited. This had increased the water flow. We recommend a visit here.
